Wednesday, September 12, 2007

MCCOOK, Neb. – The Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team recovered from a tough opening 18 holes to finish second at the first Jayhawk Conference-designated tournament of the 2007-08 golf season on Tuesday at Heritage Hills Country Club.

Hutchinson finished 13 strokes behind team champion Johnson County after shooting a 54-hole total of 912. Defending league champion Dodge City was third at 926.

The Dragons struggled during the first 18 holes played on Monday, shooting a 312 team score, which was 13 strokes out of the lead. They improved in the afternoon 18 holes to a 303 and finished even stronger on Tuesday, tying the team-low round for the tournament with a 297.

HCC had three golfers finish in the Top 10, led by sophomore Branson Real, whose 1-under-par 71 in the second round highlighted a 5-over 216 for the tournament. Real finished four strokes behind Dodge City’s Henrik Holm for medalist honors.

Also in the Top 10 was freshman Wes Nichols who tied for seventh with Johnson County’s Miles Christensen at 228. Nichols shot an opening-round 81, but came back strong with rounds of 74 and 73.

Defending Region VI champion Alex Wasinger tied for ninth with Johnson County’s Keith Erickson at 230. Wasinger’s low round was a 2-over 72 shot in the first round. He closed on Tuesday with a 76.

Sophomore nick Hague was just out of Top 10, tying for 11th with a 234 (81-78-75). Sophomore Chris Boothman tied for 19th with a 239 (83-81-75).

The next action for the Blue Dragons will be the second Jayhawk Conference-designated tournament of the season on September 24 at Hesston Country Club in Hesston.
