ASSISTANT - MICHAEL NORRIS

After a seven-year run as an assistant at Fort Hays State University, Mike Norris returns to Kansas as the Hutchinson Community College running backs coach.

Norris coached at Fort Hays State from 1996 to 2003. During that seven-year tenure with the Tigers is where he got to know now-Blue Dragon head coach Rion Rhoades.

At Fort Hays State, Norris was utilized at several positions.
From 1996 to 1998, he was the defensive line coach for the Tigers. From 1998 to 2000, Norris coached the tight ends, was the special teams coordinator and the FHSU camp administrator. In 2000, Norris was named the Tigers' running backs coach and director of varsity athletics summer conditioning.

In 2002, the job of assistant recruiting coordinator was added to Norris' job description. Norris held those positions until he left Kansas for a high school coaching opportunity in California.
Norris was hired as an assistant coach and district teacher at Victor Valley High School in Victorville, Calif., in 2003. Norris worked at Victor Valley for three years. In 2003, Norris was the receivers/defensive backs coach at Victor Valley. In 2004 he was the defensive line coach, but returned to the receivers/defensive backs position in 2005. In addition to his varsity duties, Norris was the Victor Valley junior varsity defensive coordinator in 2005 and head coach in 2006.

In 2005 Victor Valley earned a berth in the CIF playoffs and was 2 of 3 meetings with arch rival Barstow in what is called the "Axe Game."

Born in Elyria, Ohio, on Oct. 25, 1960, Norris graduated from Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Calif., in 1978. Norris started his collegiate playing career in junior college at El Camino Junior College. He was honorable mention all-Metro offensive lineman in his two years at El Camino.

Norris transferred to Fort Hays State in the spring of 1980. In two seasons with the Tigers, Norris earned first-team all Central States Intercollegiate Conference first-team honors in 1980 and second-team all-CSIC honors in 1981 as an offensive lineman. Norris also earned all-District 10 honors as a junior in 1980.

Norris also had a stint in semi-professional football for two years, playing offensive line for the Norwalk Outlaws in 1988 and 1989.

Norris holds an M.S. in Administration of Sport from Fort Hays State, received in 2002, and a B.S. in Recreation and Sports Management from Fort Hays State in 2000. He earned academic athletic awards as a graduate assistant at FHSU.

Norris is married to the former Sonya Williams. The couple has two children: Malcolm (15) and Sangai (14).
