DRAGONS UP ONE SPOT TO 6TH

IN NJCAA FOOTBALL NATIONAL POLL

HCC Sports Information

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

The Hutchinson Community College football team has its second-straight decisive win over the weekend and move up one more notch in the latest NJCAA/JC Football.com national poll releases on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons moved up to No. 6 after a 58-6 pounding of Highland in HCC’s home opener on Saturday. The Dragons (2-0, 1-0 Jayhawk Conference) travel to Dodge City on Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

Hutchinson has now appeared in seven consecutive national polls, the longest streak of being ranked since a run of 27 consecutive polls from 1994 to 1996.

The Blue Dragons started the 2009 season ranked No. 13 in the preseason NJCAA poll and climbed six spots in the first regular-season poll last week.

HCC is 2-0 to start a season for the first time since 2004.

The Blue Dragons are the NJCAA national leader in rushing once again this week, averaging 346.5 yards per game on the ground. The Dragons are No. 8 in the nation in total offense at 443.0 yards per game.

After leading the nation in rushing for the first two weeks of the 2009 season, sophomore running back Chris Clay is sixth in the nation at 147.5 yards per game. Freshman Chris Anderson is 16th at 106.5 yards per game and he is tied for the national lead in touchdowns with seven after his six-touchdown game against Highland on Saturday night.

Three Jayhawk Conference teams continue to reside in the Top 8 of the NJCAA. Butler, despite a 17-0 victory over Garden City on Saturday, dropped one spot to fifth. Fort Scott moved up one spot to eighth. Fort Scott had its bye week this week.
