CANADY EARNS FIRST-TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE HONOR;

MCEVOY IS 2ND TEAM

HCC Sports Information

Monday, November 12, 2007

Hutchinson Community College linebacker Antwon Canady was the only Blue Dragon football player named to the first team of the 2007 All-Jayhawk Conference football team, which was released on Monday by the league office.

Canady was one of four Blue Dragons to earn all-league honors. He is joined by second-team selection, wide receiver Danny McEvoy, and honorable mention players Tim Erwin and Brandon Kush.

Canady, a 6-foot-1, 236-pound redshirt-freshman from Swainsboro, Ga., was the Blue Dragons’ leading tackler this season with 106 tackles, 52 solo stops. He is the Jayhawk Conference leader in tackles per game at 11.8 tackles per game, third in the league in tackles for loss (17.5) and ninth in quarterback sacks (7).

In nine games, Canady had double-figure tackles in seven games, including a career-high 15 three times against Coffeyville, Dodge City and Butler. Canady had three fumble recoveries and five quarterback hurries in a spectacular season for the Blue Dragons under first-year coach Rion Rhoades.

McEvoy, a 6-5, 210-pound receiver from Leavenworth, made the most of his sophomore season with a 45 receptions for 517 yards and six touchdowns – all three marks are team highs. He also had two rushing touchdowns and blocked in a punt in the season finale against Independence. McEvoy put those numbers up in roughly 7.25 games played. He missed the season opener and was injured in the second quarter against Independence.

McEvoy’s 45 receptions tied for the fourth in single-season HCC history. His 61 career receptions are third on the Blue Dragon career list.

Erwin is a 6-2, 240-pound defensive end from Hoxie. He led all HCC defensive linemen in tackles with 36, 21 solo stops. Erwin had five tackles for loss, including 3.5 quarterbacks sacks and eight quarterback hurries. He had one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass break-up.

Kush is a third-year 6-4, 280-pound sophomore defensive tackle from Louisburg. He had 16 total tackles, nine solo tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. He also had four quarterback hurries. Kush was particularly adept at keeping offensive linemen busy to let the HCC linebackers rack up stop after stop.
