DRAGONS CONCLUDE SPRING WORKOUTS

WITH FINAL SCRIMMAGE

HCC Sports Information

Saturday, April 19, 2008

Quarterback Justin Schropp threw three touchdown passes and fellow signal-caller Skylar Travis had a dazzling TD run to highlight the Hutchinson Community College football team’s spring scrimmage to close out the 2008 spring season on Saturday at Gowans Stadium.

The Blue Dragons ran about a 70-play scrimmage under perfect weather conditions at Gowans Stadium. Now the Blue Dragons have to wait 19 weeks for the 2008 season opener at home against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

“We had beautiful weather day,” second-year HCC head coach Rion Rhoades said. “We haven’t had many of those this spring. We are able to get some extra plays in, more than what we planned.”

Both of HCC’s quarterbacks in camp had good games on Saturday.

Schropp’s first TD pass was 13 yards to Jordan Wyatt. He then threw a 24-yard TD pass to Wyatt and found Wyatt once again, this time from 50 yards out for a third score.

Travis, who guided HCC to a season-finale win over Independence last October, turned in the highlight run of the scrimmage when he broke multiple tackles and rumbled 65 yards for a touchdown.

Returning starting running back Damien Bates also had a 67-yard run on the first play of the scrimmage.

But the defense also got its highlights as well.

Michael Brackenhoff intercepted a Travis pass. Adam Davis had the only other turnover with a fumble recovery.

“This is probably the most enjoyable spring season that I have been apart of,” Rhoades said when asked to recap spring drills. “We have an outstanding bunch of young men. They are good character-wise and we have some players who can really play, too. That’s been really enjoyable for me and our entire staff.”

In terms of individuals who stuck out during the spring, Rhoades didn’t name names, but was happy with the overall improvement shown in the 20 practices and scrimmages.

I would say offensively and defensively both we improved overall as time went on,” Rhoades said, “especially offensively we got better each and every day.”
