INA, Ill. – The Hutchinson Community
College men’s cross country teams finished the season on a high note
Saturday at the NJCAA Cross Country Championships at Rend Lake
College.
The Blue Dragons entered the national
championships ranked 15th in the final Division I poll and wound up
finishing four spots higher in 11th.
HCC finished with a total of 410 team
points – there were 35 teams that posted scores – and an average
time of 27 minutes, 16 seconds over the 8K course.
“I’m extremely satisfied with 11th
place,” HCC head coach Terry Masterson said. “We’ve got a bunch of
kids who have worked hard and stayed together.”
Sophomore Chase Thompson was the top
Blue Dragon runner, finishing 55th overall with a season best time
of 26:43.
“Chase, Justin (Riggs), and Wade
(Adams) have all been close this year,” Masterson said. “Three
different times we’ve had different leaders.”
Wade Adams finished in 74th at
27:07. Justin Riggs and Theodore Hunter tied, finishing 87th with a
time of 27:20 to round out HCC’s runners in the Top 100.
Taje Livingston finished just six
spots out of the Top 100 with a time of 27:48. Sophomore Nick
Robinson finished his career in 141st place and a time of 28:32.
Kevin Strawn finished the day for the Blue Dragons, coming in 162nd
with a time of 29:19.
In all, 261 individual runners
competed.
“They all improved their personal
times and the team average,” Masterson said. “What more could you
ask for?”
Lansing Community College won the
men’s team national title with 111 points. Rend Land’s Ben Cheruiyot
won the individual title in a time of 23:29.
HCC had two women’s runners competing
at nationals.
Freshman Amber Kerschen finished in
the Top 100 in 75th with a time of 19:37 over the 5K course.
Freshman Andrea Schuerman finished
111th with a time of 20:13.
Both were in the top half of the
competition, as a total of 235 runners competed in the women’s
event.
“They represented their team, college
and community in a positive way with the way they ran,” Masterson
said.
Iowa Central captured the women’s
team championship with 111 points. Butler was second. Rend Lake’s
Pasca Cheruiyot won the individual crown with a time of 16:13.
