LADY DRAGONS TIE FOR SECOND AT MCPHERSON INVITE

HCC Sports Information

Saturday, September 15, 2007

MCPHERSON – Freshman Amber Kerschen was the top Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country runner for the second-straight week and helped the Lady Dragons to a tie for second at the McPherson College Invitational on Saturday at a soggy McPherson Country Club.

A heavy rain doused the course and finally let up just before race time, although the women’s race was contested in a drizzle or light rain.

The Lady Dragons tied Bethel College for second with 75 team points. Friends University ran away with the team title, placing four in the Top 6 to score 30 points.

Bethel had three runners finish in the Top 10, compared to HCC’s one. The Lady Dragons made up the difference with their fourth, fifth and sixth-place runners. The worst place of Hutchinson’s scoring times was 23rd. Bethel had two placers finish 24th and 32nd.

HCC’s average time was 23:06.48. Bethel’s average time was 23:19.88.

Kerschen just missed breaking the 22-minute mark, running a seventh-place time of 22:01.40 for her first career Top-10 finish. She improved her season-opening time by eight seconds in the adverse conditions.

Freshman Andrea Scheuerman also improved her season-opening time by 12 seconds with an 11th-place finish in 22:22.30. Sophomore Danielle Hatfield also improved over her Friends University Invitational time with a 15th-place showing in 23:08.80, 16 full seconds better than last week.

Freshman Mychala Money improved a full 2 minutes from last week, finishing 20th in 23:44.60. Freshman Natalie Marshall as 24th in 24:15.30, an improvement of 17 seconds. Sophomore Kristin Torres was 28th in 24:31.00, an improvement of 1:10 over last week.

Other Lady Dragon performances were: sophomore Amanda Young (30th, 24:34.70), freshman Ashley Dunham (33rd, 25:40.20) and freshman Kimberly Knight (34th, 25:59.00).

The Lady Dragons travel to the Tabor College Invitational on Saturday at Cottonwood Point at Marion Reservoir near Hillsboro. The men’s race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
