HINES POWERS LADY DRAGON' RALLY

FROM 20-POINT DEFICIT TO DOWN MCC

HCC Sports Information

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Sophomore Brittany Hines scored a career-high 23 points and freshman Ariella McGhee set a new single-game team rebounding record to power a huge Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball comeback against Marshalltown Community College on the final night of the Grand Prairie Hotel Classic Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

HCC trailed by 20 points in the first half, but battled back to defeat Marshalltown 75-68.

“We got off to a slow start and they got off to a hot start making all kinds of shots from the perimeter,” HCC head coach John Ontjes said. “It snowballed on us.

“Give our kids credit for fighting back. They got the game back within reach by halftime and in the second half we played defense like we should have in the first half.”

Hines ignited the second-half rally scoring 13 points in helping HCC outscore Marshalltown (3-1) 44-25 in the final 20 minutes. Hines finished shooting 8 of 10 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range.

McGhee broke a 22-year-old team record pulling down 18 rebounds on Saturday night. McGhee broke the 1986 record of 17 by Penny Fischer.

But individual efforts were overshadowed by HCC’s comeback from a 20-point first-half deficit. Marshalltown hit 8 of its first 16 shots and built a 24-4 lead with 9:50 to play in the first half after a Megan Stanton 3-point goal. Hutchinson, over the first 10 minutes was just 1 of 9 shooting.

The Lady Dragons slowly started to turn things around in the latter stages of the opening half. A Hines basket with 7:32 to play capped a 12-3 Lady Dragon run to cut the deficit to single digits at 24-16. HCC trailed 43-31 at halftime.

Hutch eventually erased the entire 20-point deficit midway through the second half and then dominated the final 10 minutes of the game, completing a 33-point turnaround, building a 13-point lead with 3:14 to play in the game.

“We will get better and better if we learn to start the game like we start the second half,” Ontjes said. “Those are the things that you are going to deal with with 18 and 19 year old kids. But I was very pleased that we did fight back. I hope we improve because we have to tough games next week”

The Lady Dragons shot 44.6 percent overall (25 of 56), but were 24 of 46 after that initial frigid start. HCC also hit 6 of 10 3-point goals. Hutch had a 51-39 rebounding advantage. HCC was just 5 of 14 from the stripe in the first half, but improved to 14 of 22 in the second half.

Both McGhee and freshman Naudia Campbell posted double-doubles against Marshalltown. McGhee had 10 points to go with her team-record 18 rebounds. She also had two steals and two blocked shots. Campbell had 11 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Sophomore Lauren Sparks had 10 points and five assists.

Marshalltown finished shooting 33.9 percent from the floor (21 of 62). The Tigers had nine 3-point goals on 28 attempts. Stanton had 15 points and six rebounds to lead Marshalltown.

The Tigers hit 16 of 19 free throws in building their first-half lead. But Marshalltown was just 1 of 12 from the free-throw line in the second half.

After Marshalltown stunned the Lady Dragons in building a 24-4 lead, HCC immediately got back into the game with a 16-0 run over the next 3 ½ minutes, pulling within 24-20 on a Brittney Chamberlin layup with 6:21 to play. Thanks to a ton of free throws and two 3-point goals, Marshalltown pushed the lead back out to 15 points (38-23) with 2:29 left in the half.

Marshalltown led 43-31 at halftime.

The Tigers led 45-31 when HCC’s started to climb back up the mountain again. A Sparks 3-point goal ignited a 27-5 run in which the Lady Dragons finally grabbed the lead. Two Heather Robben free throws tie the game at 50-all with 10:06 to play and Campbell hit another free throw for a 51-50 lead with 9:36 to play. The run ended on a Hines 3-pointer with 7:39 to play and a 58-50 HCC lead.

HCC built leads as large of 13 points in the second half.

The Lady Dragons will play host to the Airport Steakhouse Classic next weekend at the Sports Arena. Hutchinson will play Neosho County on Friday and Eastern Oklahoma State on Saturday.

OTHER QUOTES

Head Coach John Ontjes

On Brittany Hines …

“Brittany had a great game. She came out in the second half and attacked the basket and made some plays for us. We needed that from her.”

On the youth of this team …

“We fouled too much tonight. We had kids in foul trouble. We have to learn to play aggressive without fouling. When you put a good foul-shooting team to the line 19 times in the first half and the make 16 of them and on the other hand we made 5 out of 14. We just didn’t execute. I blame it on our youth. The kids really battled back and we had kids step up. It was a good performance in the second half.”
