BEIJING – The New Zealand
women’s national basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2008 Summer
Olympics on Monday (Late Sunday Hutchinson time), losing to Spain 85-62 in
Group B pool play.
Natalie Purcell, Hutchinson
Community College’s first female Olympic athlete in school history, didn’t
score in the game.
Purcell played only 7
minutes, 53 seconds and missed her only shot of the game. She had two
rebounds and one steal. Sister Charmian Purcell had one point and three
rebounds.
New Zealand, now 1-1 in
Group B, plays host China on Wednesday in the third of five pool games.
Spain took control of the
game early, building an 11-point lead after one quarter, limiting New
Zealand to just seven points. New Zealand pulled within seven points midway
through the second quarter and trailed 60-47 after three quarters, but Spain
pulled away in the final period.
Purcell, who played at HCC
in 2002-03 and 2003-04, scored five points in New Zealand’s opening win over
Mali on Saturday.
