LADY DRAGONS BREAK SHOOTING RECORD

IN ROUT OF DODGE CITY

By Steve Carpenter

HCC Sports Information Director

Wednesday, January 7, 2009

DODGE CITY – Sophomore Brittany Hines’ 10-of-10 shooting led to a school-record shooting performance by the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team on Wednesday night against Dodge City.

The Lady Dragons shot 68.3 percent from the field and posted the program’s third-largest margin of victory in a 102-32 Jayhawk Conference Western Division victory over the Conquistadors at the Dodge City Civic Center.

Hines, who came off the bench for the first time this season, was perfect from the field, including one 3-pointer, tying her career-high with 23 points and led six HCC players in double figures.

“I mentioned that to her in pregame,” HCC head coach John Ontjes said. “I told her she had a good second half last year, and to carry it over and have a big game tonight. To go 10 for 10 and score 23 points ... I hope she continues to play like that for us in conference.”

In building a 56-16 halftime lead, the Lady Dragons (14-2, 1-1 Jayhawk West) shot a school record 78.6 percent in the first half (22 of 28), getting a majority of their points on point-blank inside shots or transition layups. The Lady Dragons cooled off, slightly, to 60.0 percent in the second half (21 of 35).

For the game, HCC was 43 of 63 from the field, 5 of 12 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the free-throw line.

It was the second-time this season, and just the sixth time in program history, that HCC has broken the 100-point mark. The 102 points scored tied for second most in team history, matching the offensive output the Lady Dragons had against the Tabor JV earlier this season.

“We were very eager to get back out there,” freshman center Naudia Campbell said about getting back on the floor after dropping the conference opener on Saturday to Seward County. “We have a lot to prove. Conference play is more fast-paced and is more physical. We have to step our game up and everybody has to chip in.”

Campbell was 7 of 9 shooting and finished with 15 points. She also had a season-high four steals.

Freshman Heather Robben scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half. Robben also finished with eight rebounds. Freshman Ebony Bunton had a season-high 12 points, and freshman Brittney Chamberlin, making her first career start, also had 12 points. Freshman Sasha King came off the bench to score 10 and sophomore Lauren Sparks added nine.

Freshman Calli Matthews pulled down a season-high 12 rebounds to lead a 37-24 Hutch outrebounding advantage.

“We handled it really well, especially rebounding,” Hines said of playing short-handed. “We had some girls step up and grab those boards for us.”

Hutchinson’s defense forced 29 Dodge City turnovers, converting those into 42 points.

Dodge City (4-12, 0-2), which lost their ninth-straight game, got a team-high 20 points from Robin Parker.

The Conquistadors were 12 of 46 shooting, 0 of 3 from 3-point range. The 32 points scored and 26.1-percent shooting percentage was season lows allowed by the Lady Dragons this season.

Early 3-point goals by Chamberlin, Robben and Sparks got the Lady Dragons off to a good start. A transition layup by Chamberlin gave HCC its first double-figure lead at 17-6 with 14:31 to play in the opening half.

Hutch’s defense then started forcing numerous turnovers and led to a 22-0 run over a six-minute span. Campbell scored five straight points to lead 41-10 with 5:51 left to play in the half. The lead grew to 40 in the first half (54-14) after a Hines layup and HCC led 56-16 at halftime.

Leading 66-23 with 13:24 to play, the Lady Dragons went on another 22-0 run to lead 88-23 with 8:04 to play.

The largest lead of the game was 71 points at 98-27 and 100-29.

The Lady Dragons will play host to Garden City at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

GAME NOTES – The 70-point margin of victory is surpassed only by the 82-point margin vs. Pratt in 1975 and the 74-point margin against Bacone College in 2003. … HCC is now 49-25 all-time against Dodge City, 24-12 in Dodge City. … This was HCC’s fifth-straight victory over the Conquistadors. … Robben had a season-high four steals. … Bunton had season highs of four assists and five steals. … With Matthews’ 12-rebound effort, the Lady Dragons have 17 individual performances of 10 or more rebounds. It was Matthews’ second of the season. … HCC held an opponent without a 3-pointer for the first time this season. … The Lady Dragons were playing without freshmen Ariella McGhee and Brittney Bell.

OTHER QUOTES

Head Coach John Ontjes

On playing short-handed …

“We had a big void in rebounding. But we had kids step up their game and get some rebounds for us.”

Sophomore Brittany Hines

On her performance coming off the bench …

“I was pretty bummed by it. But I knew I had to work that much harder to do my part and help the team win the game.”

Freshman Naudia Campbell

On playing short-handed …

“We had to go out and rebound and go after everything. We also had to communicate in the post. We were thin in post, but everybody contributed both on defense and on offense.”
