The Hutchinson Community College women’s
basketball team tied for the third-largest scoring output in a single game
on Friday night in a 99-30 victory over the Oklahoma Baptist JV Friday night
in the Airport Steakhouse Classic.
It was the third time that HCC (8-3) has
scored 99 points in a game and was the most point since scoring 94 in 2004
against the Bacone College JV.
The 69-point margin of victory was the third
largest in program history and the largest since a 65-point victory over
Hamilton College to open the 2006-07 season.
The game, which snapped a two-game losing
streak, was a banner effort for several Lady Dragons individually:
l
Sophomore Amanda Fessenden tied for game-high honors with 17 points, hitting
two 3-point goals to move last Karla Tailele (2004-06) into 10th place on
the Lady Dragon career 3-point list with 63. She also was 5 of 5 from the
free-throw line to move into seventh place on that career list with 170.
l
Freshman Morgan Leatherbury had a season-high 17 points, tying a season-high
with three 3-pointers and finishing with three assists and five steals.
l
Freshman Briyana Evans had season highs of 15 points, five steals and two
assists. Her six field goals were also a season-high.
l
Freshman Brittany Hines had season-highs 13 points and five assists.
l
Sophomore Julie Richardson had a career-high 10 points.
l
Freshman Kylie Shepard had a season-high seven points.
Freshman guard Lauren Sparks was the sixth
Lady Dragon to score in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
As a team, the Lady Dragons had season highs
in points scored (99), field goals made (35), overall shooting percentage
(56.5), points in a half (54), assists (27) and steals (22).
Hutchinson shot 35 of 62 from the floor and
was 9 of 17 from 3-point range and 20 of 27 from the free-throw line. The
Lady Dragons committed only 15 turnovers and outrebounded the Bison 43-23.
Oklahoma Baptist shot 8 of 39 for the game
(20.5 percent) and was 4 of 23 from 3-point range. The Bison were 10 of 20
from the free-throw line. The Bison scored just nine points in the second
half, the fewest allowed by the Lady Dragons this season. OBU was 3 of 21
shooting in the second half and committed 33 turnovers, the most forced by
the Lady Dragons this season.
Amanda White had eight points and April
Wallace had six points to lead OBU. Hutchinson Central Christian product
Kylee Belknap had five points.
“The win felt good,” Richardson said. “We
needed a boost of confidence.”
“We were able to get our confidence back
after the Shootout,” HCC head coach John Ontjes added.
HCC had control from the very start, scoring
the first 17 points. OBU finally got on the board when Michelle Prenzlow hit
a field goal at the 14:45 mark. Hutchinson then took its first 20-point
lead at 23-1 with a Shepard 3-pointer at the 12:38 mark. With Hutch up 30-3,
OBU finally scored its first field goal of the game at the 8:37 mark by
Jessica Madison.
HCC reached a 30-point margin at 35-5 after
an Amber Schroer score in the paint with 7:23 to play. A Fessenden bucket
pushed the first-half lead to 39 at 44-5 with 5:20 to go. The Bison
outscored HCC 16-10 to close out the half, but the Lady Dragons still led
54-21 at halftime.
Hutchinson started the second half with all
reserves, but experienced no drop off in play. Leatherbury hit her first
two 3-point attempts of the second half, giving HCC its first 40-point lead
at 62-21 with 17:35 to go in the game. After the Bison scored four straight,
HCC scored the next 13 points for a 77-25 lead with 8:23 remaining.
The Bison made their last field goal of the
contest at 5:02 when Belknap hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 81-29.
HCC scored the next 17 points, and after a Leatherbury free throw, led 96-29
with just one minute remaining.
Katie Hockett hit a free throw to give
Oklahoma Baptist its 30th point. Leatherbury then made a short jumper to
give the Lady Dragons 98 points with just a half minute remaining.
Richardson was fouled with just seven seconds remaining, and made the second
of two free throws for the final points of the contest.
“I felt a little pressure,” Richardson said.
“A lot of people were wanting 100 points.”
“I just wanted to win,” Evans said. “100
points didn’t mean anything to me.”
HCC will look to keep rolling on Saturday,
when they take on 2-9 Neosho County at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena.
