Dave Brown knows the
Jayhawk Conference. Known as a top-notch recruiter for both instate
and out-of-state players, Brown has coached in the Jayhawk
Conference for 15 years.
Brown has brought
that wealth of knowledge to Hutchinson Community College. He is now
in his second season as a men’s assistant basketball coach.
The 2007-08 Blue
Dragons went 23-9, finished second in the Jayhawk West and advanced
to the Region VI Tournament quarterfinals. The Dragons also produced
the program’s fifth first-team All-American and 2008 Jayhawk West
Player of the Year in Bobby Maze.
Before coming to
HCC, Brown was the head coach at Seward County Community College for
11 seasons, guiding the Saints to Jayhawk Conference Western
Division titles in 1998 and 2002 and four other league runner-up
finishes. Brown led the 1998 Saints to a Region VI championship and
a third-place finish in the NJCAA Tournament.
He was named Jayhawk
West coach of the year three times (1998, 2002 and 2005).
Before taking over
the Seward County program in 1996, Brown served as an assistant at
Seward County for four seasons under Dale Reed.
Brown is Seward
County’s all-time coaching leader in wins with 253 wins against 104
losses. The 253 wins rank No. 7 in Region VI coaching history.
During his tenure at
Seward County, Brown coached four first-team NJCAA All-Americans,
five Jayhawk West Most Valuable Players, three Jayhawk West Freshmen
of the Year and nine of the top 10 leading scorers in Saints
basketball history.
Brown earned an
Associate of Arts degree from Fort Scott Community College in 1975
and graduate from Kansas Wesleyan University in 1978.
Brown has three
children: Heather, who is married and has three children (Hannah, 4;
Joey, 18 months; Justin, 3 months; Nicole, who lives in Hutchinson
and is employed at Home Depot; and Jason, who attends Pittsburg
State University. |
