COFFEYVILLE – The showdown between No. 3
Coffeyville and No. 14 Hutchinson Community College lived up to its billing
on Saturday night at Nellis Hall.
Coffeyville got 21 points from J.J. Seymore
and 19 from Daniel Payne as the Red Ravens held on for a 76-74 victory over
the Blue Dragons.
Coffeyville improved to 5-1, while Hutchinson drops to 4-3. But Hutchinson coach
Ryan Swanson said the Dragons played with the kind of effort it needs to
play with.
“No one hates to lose more than I do. But if
it takes coming down to Coffeyville to get better, I'll do it every time,”
Swanson said. “We have something to build on. I guarantee we got better
tonight. That's what is it about.”
Sophomore Bobby Maze had another big night
for HCC with 23 points and six assists to lead the Dragons. Sophomore Ken
Bowman finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Lamar Falley
had 13 points, hitting 3 of 8 3-point goals and redshirt-freshman Antonio
Weary had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Henry Rogers finished with seven
points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead a 49-37 Blue Dragon rebounding
advantage over the Red Ravens.
HCC was 32 of 72 shooting overall (44.4
percent), including 5 of 19 from 3-point range. The Dragons struggled at the
free-throw line, hitting only 5 of 13 attempts from the stripe. The Dragons
also had 21 turnovers in which Coffeyville converted into 22 points.
The Red Ravens shot 28 of 66 overall (42.4
percent) and 8 of 28 from 3-point range. The Ravens also hit 12 of 24
free-throw attempts and turned the ball over 16 times. The Ravens had 14
steals, four from Seymore.
Hutchinson, which trailed most of the game, took a 70-69 lead when Rogers hit a
free throw with 3 minutes, 53 seconds left. But the Dragons went scoreless
for the next 3:17 as Coffeyville took a 75-70 lead, which was the eighth
lead change of the night.
Hutchinson, though, scored on its next two
possessions to cut the deficit to 76-74 with 27 seconds left when Ken Bowman
scored on a putback.
Hutchinson had two chances to tie the score after that, but Maze missed the front
end of a 1-and-1 with seven seconds left, and then he missed a shot after
Coffeyville missed two free throws with 6.3 seconds left.
“Nobody feels worse about those misses than
Bobby,” Swanson said. “He got a great look at the end. He probably hits that
60 percent of the time, it just rimmed in and out. The thing is without
Bobby, we wouldn't have been close.”
Hutchinson got off to a quick start, hitting
five of its first six shots to jump to an 11-4 lead.
But Coffeyville then went on one of its two
big first-half runs. The Red Ravens hit four 3-pointers during a 16-2 run.
Hutchinson regained the lead at 27-26 when Falley hit two jumpers, including a
3-pointer, and Rogers canned a 3-pointer with six minutes left in the half.
But the Ravens scored 14 of the next 16
points and took a 40-31 lead into halftime.
Hutchinson then made a run of its own, going
on a 12-2 burst to tie it at 47-47 with 14:25 left. Bowman capped the run
with a dunk and a jumper.
Coffeyville regained a narrow lead, but when
Falley hit a 3-pointers, the Dragons went back on top, 60-59, with 8:45
left. The game stayed close the rest of the way.
