Hutchinson Community College sophomore Bobby
Maze was named the 2008 Jayhawk Conference Western Division Most Valuable
Player, the league announced on Thursday.
The All-Jayhawk Conference and All-Region VI
teams were both announced on Thursday. The Blue Dragons had three players
appear on the postseason teams.
Maze was named to the first team on both
postseason teams. Sophomore Ken Bowman was named first-team all-Jayhawk West
and second-team all-region. Redshirt freshman Antonio Weary was named
second-team all-Jayhawk West.
Bobby Maze
In his one season at Hutchinson, Bobby Maze
quickly made a name for himself as one of the best point-guards in Blue
Dragon history.
Maze becomes the first Blue Dragon since
Brandon “Pooh” Gary in 2004 to earn Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player
honors.
Maze’s legacy at HCC was made from his
ability to distribute the ball with a style and frequency where oohs and
ahhs from the Blue Dragon faithful became commonplace.
Maze became only the third Blue Dragon point
guard to have 200 assists in a season, finishing with 218. That’s second on
HCC’s single-season list and ninth on the Blue Dragon career assist list.
Maze had a combined 30 assists in the 2007
Quarterback Classic on Nov. 1-3. Against Brown Mackie on Nov. 2, Maze broke
the school record for single-game assists for the first time when he had 13
assists.
The sophomore transfer from Oklahoma topped
that mark with an incredible 16 assists against Barton County on Jan. 23.
Maze had nine or more assists in a single game nine times, a feat no other
HCC point guard has ever accomplished.
Maze also turned himself into a solid scoring
threat, becoming the only HCC player this season to score in double figures
in every game.
Maze became the first Blue Dragon since Roy
“Pooh” Hairston in 1994 to average 20 or more points for a season and is
only the 10th HCC player to do so since 1968. Maze averaged 20.7 points per
game, shooting 50.5 percent from the field overall and 72.9 percent from the
free-throw line.
Maze had five games of 30 or more points,
scoring 34 twice this season against No. 7 Arkansas-Fort Smith and Colby. He
had 16 games of 20 or more points.
He was named NJCAA Division I Men’s
Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 6
Maze had a perfect game against Friends
University JV on New Year's Day, going 7 of 7 from the field and 5 of 5 from
the free-throw line for 19 points. He also added 12 assists and had no
turnovers with two steals and a blocked shot. He then scored 21 points on 7
of 13 shooting in an 80-76 win over Seward County on Jan. 5.
Ken Bowman
Bowman entered the 2007-08 season as a
second-team NJCAA Preseason All-American.
The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward from Phoenix
didn’t disappoint, averaging 14.8 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game.
Bowman shot 53.5 percent from the field and led the team with 66 blocked
shots.
Bowman achieved a new career high with 26
points against Allen County on Nov. 23, where he shot 10 of 16 from the
floor. He matched his 26-point effort on 13 of 20 shooting against Fort
Scott on Dec. 2 at the Jayhawk Shootout.
He re-established a career high for rebounds
with 19 against Pratt on Jan. 16.
Bowman made a late-season rush up the career
and single-season blocked shot charts.
Bowman has 107 career rejections, which is
fourth on the career list.
Bowman has 66 blocked shots this season,
which now places him fourth on the single-season Top 10.
On Jan. 30, Bowman had a career-high six
blocked shots against Cloud County. He tied that mark against Fort Scott on
March 4.
Bowman had 42 blocked shots in his last 12
games.
Antonio Weary
Redshirt freshman Antonio Weary did a lot of
learning during the 2006-07 season. The 6-foot-3 guard/forward from Los
Angeles showed Blue Dragons fans a very athletic, entertaining style of
play.
Playing in 31 of 32 games, Weary averaged
10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds. He shot 52.0 percent from the field, including
several dazzling dunks. Weary had a season-high 20 points against Johnson
County on Nov. 24.
An ankle injury late in the season, slowed
Weary’s season down.
In Jayhawk West play Weary averaged 11.8
points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.0 percent. Weary has
scored in double figures in 11 of his last 18 games and 14 of his last 23
games.
Weary was second on the team in steals (45).
