GRAND JUNCION, Colo. – Just when it looked like there was one more comeback left in them, the Hutchinson Blue Dragons’ season came to an end on Monday.

Trailing by as many as eight runs to South Mountain, Ariz., in an elimination game of the 2005 NJCAA World Series on Monday at Suplizio Field, the Blue Dragons nearly came all the way back, but lost 11-8, ending HCC’s first appearance in the World Series with a 1-2 record.

Hutchinson, which won its first regional baseball championship in 30 years, completes head coach Kyle Crookes’ first season at 38-22, and as Jayhawk West and Region VI champions.

ROBERTS HURDLES WAY TO NATIONAL RUNNER-UP FINISH

HCC Sports Information

Wednesday May, 18, 2005

LEVELLAND, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team saved its best performances of the 2005 NJCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships for the final day of competition at South Plains College.

Freshmen Kyle Roberts and Drew Luty both scored for the Blue Dragons in the 400 intermediate hurdles on Wednesday with Roberts finishing as a national runner-up. That performance helped the Blue Dragon men to a Top 10 finish, placing eighth with 40 points. Central Arizona won the men’s team championship.

Roberts, a freshman from Hutchinson High, was third and Luty, a freshman from Inman, qualified for the 400 IM finals in third and eighth, respectively. Both Blue Dragons improved on those marks in the finals. Roberts blew to his national runner-up finish in a time of 52.01 seconds. Luty was sixth in 54.25 seconds.

Roberts and freshman decathlete Jamie Alexander both leave the national championships with silver medals. Alexander had a strong second day in the decathlon to finish second, missing a national championship by a mere 59 points on Tuesday. <STORY>
