Former Hutchinson Community
College All-America baseball player Thad Weber tossed a no-hitter on
Saturday night for the Erie SeaWolves, a Class AA affiliate of the Detroit
Tigers.
Weber faced just two batters
over the minimum and got plenty of run support in a 16-0 bashing of the
Akron Aeros.
The no-hitter was Erie’s
first in 14 years. It was also witnessed by Weber’s parents, Les and Nancy,
who traveled from Nebraska to see the game.
Weber threw just 88 pitched
and struck out a career-high 10 en route to his seventh victory of the
season.
The former Blue Dragon –
Weber played at Hutchinson in 2005 and 2006 before transferring to the
University of Nebraska – retired the first eight batters, four by strikeout.
Akron finally got a runner aboard on a fielding error by second baseman
Danny Worth.
Weber went on to retire the
next 13 Akron batters before plunking Matt McBride to lead off the eighth.
Weber retired the final six batters he faced, the final two on strikeouts.
Detroit’s 16th-round pick in
the 2008 draft is now 7-3 at Erie with 3.95 ERA. Weber has won his last
three decisions.
Weber was a key figure as
both a pitcher and hitter for the Blue Dragons in 2005 when HCC captured its
first Region VI championship in 30 years and played in its first NJCAA World
Series. He hit .453 and won 10 games in his sophomore season where HCC won
the Jayhawk West title outright and he earned second-team NJCAA All-America
honors. Weber was also the league’s MVP in 2006.
Weber remains tied for
fourth on HCC’s career batting average list with a .417 career average. He
is also fourth in career hits (141), fourth in career RBIs (111) and is the
career leader in doubles (37). Weber is tied for fourth in career pitching
victories with 14 and is seventh in strikeouts (106).
In Weber’s junior season at
Nebraska in 2007, he worked primarily out of the bullpen and was 1-2 with
three saves in 21 appearances with a 5.55 earned-run average. Weber earned a
spot in the weekend rotation in his senior season of 2008. He was 9-5 with a
6.15 ERA.
One of Weber’s current
SeaWolf teammates is Andy Dirks, who played with Weber at Hutchinson in 2005
and 2006 before going on to Wichita State.
