FORMER DRAGON DIBBENS

SIGNED BY SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

HCC Sports Information

Sunday, August 23, 2009

Former Hutchinson Community College baseball player Derek Dibbens (2006-2007) signed a free-agent contract with the San Francisco Giants late last week.

Dibbens, a McPherson native, reported to the Giants’ Arizona Rookie Team and must pass a physical before being able to join the team.

Dibbens, who completed his collegiate career this past spring at Ouachita Baptist University, wasn’t drafted in the 2009 MLB amateur draft in June. He spent this past summer as an assistant coach for the Hutchinson Monarchs Summer League baseball team and was picked up late by the Houston Apollos to play in the just completed NBC World Series in Wichita.

Dibbens told The Hutchinson News that the Giants were in need of more catchers in their minor league system.

While at HCC, Dibbens was one of the top defensive catchers in program history. His .986 fielding percentage ranks sixth-best overall in Blue Dragon history and his No. 1 for all catchers. In two seasons, Dibbens threw out 29.7 percent of would-be basestealers. He had a career .293 batting average with two home runs and 25 RBIs.

Dibbens was a .327 hitter at Ouachita Baptist this past season. He had two home runs and a collegiate career high 31 RBIs. Defensively, Dibbens posted a .987 fielding percentage and threw out 16 of 80 basestealers.
