GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson
Community College baseball team climbed within a game of .500 with a Jayhawk
West doubleheader sweep of Garden City on Tuesday at Williams Stadium in
Garden City.
Shaun Hoover hit a pair of
home runs and drove in a season-high five runs and sophomore left-handed
pitcher Tim Statz threw 5 2-3 innings of three-hit ball to lead the Blue
Dragons in Game 1 to a 10-3 victory over Garden City.
Sophomore right-hander Scott
Keffer followed that with a complete-game six-hit shutout as HCC run-ruled
the Broncbusters 10-0 in six innings in the nightcap.
The series, which was
postponed three days by the spring snowstorm over the weekend, will conclude
today with a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
The Dragons are now 16-17
overall, but more importantly 12-6 in the Jayhawk West. Garden City is 22-11
overall and 7-7 in league play.

Trever Adams’ two-run double
and Hoover’s three-run home run highlighted Hutchinson’s five-run first
inning which gave Statz plenty of breathing room before ever taking the
mound on Tuesday.
Statz (2-0) had his longest
outing of the season, going 5 2-3 innings. He struck out five and allowed
just three hits, two yearned runs and two walks. Statz carried a shutout
into the fifth inning. Michael Peterson closed out threw the final 1 1-3
innings to close out the victory.
The Blue Dragons reached
double figures in hits for the sixth time in seven games. Hoover led the way
going 2 for 4 – both hits were home runs – with two runs scored and five
RBIs. Clay Cuno hit his seventh homer of the season, an estimated 430-foot
blast to straight-away center field, and went 2 for 4 as well.
Garden City had five hits
against two HCC pitchers. Leadoff hitter Cass Via went 2 for 4 with two
RBIs.

The Blue Dragons smacked 13
hits, all singles, against three Garden City pitchers. Seven of the nine HCC
offensive starters drove in at least one run.
But the story was Keffer
(3-3), who won his third straight decision and threw his second career
complete-game shutout. Keffer scattered six hits. Only twice did Garden City
have multiple base runners and no Buster reached third base. Keffer allowed
six hits and walked two while striking out six. Keffer stranded nine Garden
City runners on base.
Five different Dragons had
multiple-hit games, led by freshman Luke Acosta, who went 3 for 4 with two
runs and one RBI. Adams. Roy and Hoover and Arrow Cunningham all had two
hits. Hoover drove in three runs and Roy had two RBIs.
The Dragons scored a single
run in the first inning and broke the game open with a six-run third-inning.
HCC had five consecutive hits; the bit hit was Hoover’s two-run single. .
GAME NOTES
– With hits in both games, Trever Adams extended his hitting streak to 18
games. Clay Cuno extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Andrew Dixon had
his hitting streak stopped at seven games. Adam Roy had his stopped at six
games. … In his last three appearances, Scott Keffer has lowered his
earned-run average 7.96 points to 4.50. During his three-game win streak,
Keffer’s ERA is 2.65. … Keffer’s other shutout was a three-hit shutout last
season against Seward County at Hobart-Detter Field. … Clay Cuno and Luke
Acosta lead the team in multi-hit games with 11. … Hoover became the fourth
Blue Dragon this season to have five or more RBIs in a game. |
