Freshman Luke Acosta went 4 for 4 and Adam Roy had three hits and drove in four runs as the Hutchinson Community College baseball team pounded out an 18-8 victory over Rose State in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Hobart-Detter Field.

In the nightcap, Rose State scored in five of seven innings and held off the Dragons to split the doubleheader with a 13-11 victory.

The Blue Dragons (4-8) will meet Butler in a four-game Jayhawk West series on Friday and Saturday, which is a schedule change. Friday’s doubleheader with the Grizzlies starts at 3 p.m. and Saturday’s games begin at 1 p.m.

 

GAME 1 RECAP (BOXSCORE)

On an offense day, the Blue Dragons scored four runs in the second and fourth innings and then put the game away with an eight-run sixth inning to invoke the 10-run mercy rule.

The Blue Dragons pounded out a season-high 16 hits with six extra base hits.

Acosta had his first collegiate four-hit game with two runs scored and three RBIs. Roy went 3 for 5 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs.

Arrow Cunningham had two hits and three RBIs. Mace Krol scored a pair of runs and drove in three. Andrew Dixon also had two hits.

The Blue Dragons took advantage of 10 Rose State walks and three Rose State errors.

Matt Williams (1-0) earned the win in 1 2-3 innings of relieve. Williams allowed no runs and three hits and struck out two. Jason Borchardt got his first save of the season with two strikeouts in 2-3 of an inning.

Starter Scott Cure had a no decision, going 3 2-3 innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs.

Rose State had 12 hits. Kevin Blue was 4 for 4, while Brian Carter was 3 of 4 with four RBIs.

 

GAME 2 RECAP (BOXSCORE)

The Blue Dragons reached double figures in hits for the fourth-straight game with 12. But HCC pitchers walked eight and the defense had four errors in a 13-11 setback in the nightcap.

Tied at 11-all through five innings, Jake Byers hit a two-run homer off of Broady Talliaferro (0-1) to take the lead.

Five different Blue Dragons had two hits each. Dixon, Acosta, Clayton Cuno and Roy all went 2 for 4 while Jon Schneider went 2 for 3. Trever Adams hit a three-run home run, his second of the season. Cuno also drove in three runs.

Byers had three hits, two runs scored and four RBIs to lead Rose State’s 10-hit attack. Derek Clenn and Ryon Butts had two hits each.

HCC starter Adam Loecker lasted one inning, giving up three runs and four walks. Cody Lillich went three innings, allowing six hits, five earned runs and struck out two. Kyle Rosine threw one scoreless inning of relief with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.
