Starting pitchers Ben Graham and Jason
Borchardt led a dominant performance on the hill Tuesday afternoon to lead
the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a Jayhawk Conference
Western Division sweep of Cloud County at Hobart-Detter field.
Graham threw a complete-game three hitter in
HCC’s 6-1 victory in Game 1. Borchardt went five strong innings and got some
help from the bullpen in the Dragons’ 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
The Blue Dragons took 3 out of 4 from Cloud
County in the first four-game Jayhawk West series of the season. Hutchinson
is at preseason Jayhawk West favorite Butler on Saturday and Sunday for a
four-game series.
Before that, though, the Blue Dragons will
travel to Arkansas City on Thursday for a makeup game with Cowley College at
City Ballpark. First pitch is at two p.m.
The Blue Dragon offense redeemed itself after
squandering a potential no-hit bid by freshman Tim Statz in Monday’s 5-1
loss in nine innings to the Thunderbirds.
The Dragons and six runs on eight hits in the
opener and nine runs on nine hits in the nightcap. Adam Roy was a combined 4
for 7 in Tuesday’s doubleheader.
Game 1 Recap
After allowing a run in Cloud County’s first
at-back, Graham pitched strong to earn his first career complete game.
Graham struck out six and walked just one. She allowed three hits and one
earned run.
He retired 15 of the final 16 Cloud County
batters he faced, including 13 straight until he allowed a one-out walk in
the seventh to Devan Dageford.
Graham got all the run support he needed in
the first inning, when the Dragons sent 10 to the plate and scored six runs
on four hits. Cloud County helped out with four errors.
Sophomore Matthew Yerby had a run-scoring
single in the inning to make it 2-0. The inning was broken open two batters
later when with the bases loaded, Matt LaGree scored after Cloud pitcher
Brent Atkinson fielded a grounder by Trever Adams and uncorked a wild throw
home. HCC placed four more after that and led 6-1 after one inning.
LaGree, Roy and Yerby had two hits each to
lead Hutchinson. LaGree had two doubles, his third and fourth of the season.

Game 2 Recap
The Dragons jumped on starter Jake Farrington
for three runs in the first and two more in the third of the nightcap.
LaGree’s two-run double got HCC going,
scoring Jamel Cervantez and Eric deBlanc. Sophomore Stewart Hoover added a
run-scoring single for a 3-0 HCC lead after one inning. Yerby launched his
first home run of the season in the third, a two-run shot to left field for
a 5-0 Dragon lead.
Deblanc, Roy and Hoover had two hits each to
lead HCC’s nine-hit attack. Cervantez and deBlanc scored two runs each in
the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the line-up. LaGree, Yerby and Hover drove in two
runs each. Hoover hit his first home run, a solo blast in the second inning
to left field.
Borchardt (1-1) earned his first Blue Dragon
victory with five innings of work, surrendering four hits, one walk and one
earned run while striking out six. Borchardt struggled a little in the four
with a pair of walks and two wild pitches, but the freshman hurler made
several quality pitches to get out of the inning without only one run
scored.
Freshman Kyle Rosine allowed one hit and
struck out one in the sixth inning. Roy closed the game out with one
strikeout in one inning of work.
