DRAGONS ROUT ODESSA, FALL TO NEW MEXICO

HCC Sports Information

Monday, February 18, 2008

ODESSA, Texas – The top four batters in the order combined for eight hits and 10 RBIs to lead the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a 13-3 victory over Odessa College in the third game of the Blue Dragons’ season-opening four-game road swing through Texas.

No. 14 New Mexico Junior College then edged the Blue Dragons 4-2 to close out the road trip for HCC at 2-2. Hutchinson’s regularly scheduled game on Tuesday at Cowley College was postponed. No make-up date has been announced.

Freshman Jamell Cervantez went 4 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs and sophomore Matt LaGree went 2 for 4 with a run, two doubles and three driven in to lead the Blue Dragons against Odessa. Leadoff hitter Clint Bieberle had no official times at bat, but finished with three walks, two runs scored and two RBIs. Redshirt Freshman Adam Roy went 2 for 5 with two driven in.

The Blue Dragons had their best offensive output of the young season with 11 total hits.

Sophomore Ben Graham (1-0) pitched 4 1-3 innings in his first career start to get the victory on the hill. Ryan Frevert, in his Blue Dragon debut, struck out four in two innings of relief.

The Dragons led 3-0 after four innings when they broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning. The big hits of the inning were two-run doubles by Cervantez and LaGree and an RBI triple by Roy.

After Odessa finally broke through against Graham for three runs in the fifth, the Dragons responded with two more runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh

New Mexico Junior College Recap

In a rematch of HCC’s 2006 Juco World Series opener, New Mexico Junior College pitcher Justin Robinson struck out 13 Blue Dragons and gave up just one hit en route to a 4-2 victory over Hutchinson in the final game of the Texas swing.

The Dragons started out well, getting two runs in the first inning off of Robinson. LaGree walked and then Roy delivered a two-run home run to left field. But after that, the Dragons had just one more baserunner. That was Matt DeBlanc, who reached on an error in the third inning. After that, Robinson retired the final 13 Blue Dragons he faced in order.

HCC freshman Jason Borchardt didn’t pitch badly, giving up two runs in the second and third innings. He allowed only four hits and three earned runs while striking out five in four innings. Freshman Kyle Rosine struck out three and allowed only one walk in two innings of relief.

The Blue Dragons will play Fort Scott and Iowa Central on both Saturday and Sunday in Fort Scott.
