STUBENHOFER, SCOLES COMBINE TO HANDCUFF MIDLAND;

HCC SPLITS 2008 SEASON-OPENING GAMES

HCC Sports Information

Sunday, February 17, 2008

MIDLAND, Texas – Sophomore pitcher Mitch Stubenhofer and Ryan Scoles combined to silence the powerful Midland College bats to one run and three hits en route to the Hutchinson Community College baseball team winning its 2008 season opener 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Christian Field.

Opening day turned out to be a split for the Blue Dragons. Western Texas scored six first-inning runs to defeat HCC 6-1.

The Blue Dragons close out their Texas swing on Monday with games in Odessa against Odessa College and New Mexico Junior College. Tuesday’s game at Cowley College was postponed.

Stubenhofer (1-0) struck out six and allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings pitched. He walked one and hit two batters. The only run allowed was to one of those hit batters.

Midland’s Travis Lee was hit by a pitch and singled home one out later by Blake McNabb. After that, Stubenhofer retired 17 of the next 20 batters he faced.

Scoles came in with a 2-1 lead in the seventh. After allowing a one-out single to Chad Stang, subsequently picked him off of first, and then struck out pinch-hitter Aaron Haley to end the game. Scoles had two strikeouts to earn his first career save.

The Dragons had just five hits in the opener, but made them count.

HCC tied the game in the second inning, when with two out Eric DeBlanc tripled and was doubled home by Trever Adams. Hutchison took the lead in the fifth inning. Again with two out, Corey Miller and Chris Marquez drew walks. After a pair of Midland errors, Miller scored the go-ahead run on a ball booted by Midland third baseman Blake McNabb.

DeBlanc was 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead HCC.

Western Texas Recap

After taking a quick 1-0 lead, Western Texas answered with six runs in the bottom of the first inning to top the Blue Dragons 6-1.

Freshman Tim Statz (0-1) struggled in his first start, allowing five hits, three walks and had two wild pitches and a balk, which led to six earned runs. Scott Keffer came in and threw four near-perfect innings of relief, striking out five. Sophomore Zach Biery had a perfect inning of work.

The Dragons had five hits in the game. DeBlanc again had two hits in three at-bats. Clint Bieberle, Ben Ferrell and Matt LaGree had the other hits.

HCC scored a first-inning run of Western Texas starter Felix Cardenas. Bieberle led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After moving to third on Ferrell’s infield single, Bieberle scored on a LaGree sacrifice fly to give Hutch a 1-0 lead.

But the lead was short-lived as the first six Western Texas batters reached base off Statz in the first and eventually scored six runs.
