Iowa Central’s A.G. Bradford did nothing to tarnish her No. 1 Heptathlon ranking during the first day of competition Thursday at the 2009 NJCAA Heptathlon championship at Gowans Stadium.

Through four of seven events, Bradford has opened up a 100-point lead over the field. She scored 3,287 points on Day 1. South Plains Colleen Felix was second with 3,187 points. Mesa’s Samantha Henderson was third with 3,048 points.

The final three events – Long jump, javelin and 800 meters – will be on Friday

Bradford opened the multi-event competition with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles, posing a time of 14.22 seconds. She backed that up by winning the long jump with a top leap of 5 feet, 10.5 inches.

Bradford then finished seventh in the shot put at 31-10.25. She closed out the day by winning the 200 meters in 25.25 seconds.

South Plains’ Colleen Felix was the only other heptathlon event winner on Thursday, taking the shot put with a top throw of 42-0.75.

Two individual national champions were crowned on Thursday.

Central Arizona’s Rose Tanui breezed to victory in the women’s 10,000 meters. Tanui posted a time of 36:27.26. She lapped the entire field with the exception of national runner-up Leah Thompson of Butler Community College, who ran a time of 36:50.81.

Rend Lake’s Ashley Holmes dominated in the women’s discus, wining with a distance of 158-2.

Competition continues through Saturday.
