Senior guard Vivian
Olvera scored a tournament-high 28 points to lead Southwestern
Heights to the Class 3A state championship over Wichita Collegiate.
Olvera was 6 of 12
from the field with one 3-point goal, and was 15 of 18 from the
free-throw line. She also had six rebounds, three assists and a
steal.
Britney Butler and
Deni Jacobs had nine points each for the Lady Mustangs, who were
dealing with the loss of one of the players' parents earlier in the
week.
Collegiate (23-3) led
16-12 after one quarter, but Southwestern Heights (25-1) fought back
to take a 33-32 lead at halftime.
The Spartans led by
as many as five points in the fourth quarter after tournament
scoring leader Ashia Woods hit two free throws with 4:57 to play to
give Collegiate a 53-48 lead.
With the Lady
Mustangs still trailing 57-53 with 2:28 to go, Heidi Brown hit her
only shot of the game, a 3-pointer, with 2:05 to go to pull within
57-56. After getting a defensive stop, Olvera was fouled with 1:24
to play and she hit both free throws to give Heights a 58-57 lead.
Olvera hit 10 free throws in the final 1:24, but it took a Kathy
Eakes free throw - after the Lady Mustangs missed three straight
from the line, with 10 seconds to play to seal the state
championship.
