Hutchinson Community College Athletics

Coach Masterson has been at HCC for the past 35 years; longer than anyone in the history of the school. He earned an AA degree at HCC in 1959, where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track. He was one of the first junior college fullbacks to combine size and speed. In track he ran low hurdles, the mile relay and threw the discus. He received his bachelors degree at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas.

After college he taught and coached at Inman, Halstead and Ellinwood high schools and then accepted the job as Head Track Coach and assistant football coach at HCC in 1968, after getting his masters degree in sociology. He began specializing in women's cross country in 1980. "The first cross country meet I ever saw, I coached." said Masterson. His cross country teams have competed at the national level several times. This past year, Coach Masterson not only led the HCC Women's Cross Country Team to a NJCAA DII, National Championship; his men's team placed 8th; and he earned the honor of being named the 2001 NJCAA Cross Country Coach of the Year.

His philosophy of coaching is simple: "I try to get the best out of a kid. Sometimes that's to win, sometimes not."

Coach Masterson's wife Nancy is a an art instructor at HCC and highly respected in her field throughout Kansas.
