BIG FIRST HALF BY SEWARD COUNTY

BURIES LADY DRAGONS

By Steve Carpenter

HCC Sports Information Director

Saturday, January 3, 2009

Seward County’s 3-point barrage and red-hot shooting put the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team in a deep hole the Lady Dragons never climbed out of in the Jayhawk Conference Western Division opener for both teams on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

The Saints shot 56.3 percent in the first half, including 9 of 12 3-pointers in the opening half as Seward County opened a 24-point halftime lead and cruised past Hutchinson 90-72.

HCC’s worst loss of the season put a damper on freshman Ariella McGhee’s historical game.

McGhee became the first HCC basketball player, male or female, to have 20 points and 20 rebounds in one game. McGhee broke the Lady Dragons’ single-game rebounding record for the second time this season. Her old mark was 18 set against Hesston College on Dec. 13. McGhee tied the record on Nov. 8 with 17 rebounds against Marshalltown.
