Avoid Prom Night at any cost

By Alex Keel
Staff Writer

Among the recent craze of horror movie remakes, Nelson McCormick’s “Prom Night” is one of the worst. Based solely in name on the lackluster 1980 Jamie Lee Curtis vehicle of the same name.

The film follows young Donna Keppel (Brittany Snow) on her prom night and how a person from her past comes back to terrify her.

Years prior one of Donna’s teachers Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech) became obsessed with her and started to stalk her. He was eventually caught and put in the local insane asylum. Now on the night of prom he escapes and decides to track down his one-time obsession.

The cast is filled with the usual eye-candy, good looking teens that get knocked off one after another. However none of these kids really stand out from each other or make the audience care about them.

Also McCormick never lets any real tension build by always giving away the scares before they happen.

The PG-13 rating also keeps the film from being as intense as it should have been.

Lately there has been a huge surge of these horror remakes; most of them have been pretty awful.

Now that “Prom Night” has already made a profit at the box office they probably won’t stop coming.

Next year there’s already plans to remake “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. It would be nice to see some more original horror movies coming out these years.

But as long as these remakes remain profitable they will keep happening.

Back to “Prom Night” though, this is a great example of why horror films aren’t scary anymore. There’s not one moment of tension in this whole film, at no time did I even jump in my seat.

The horror films from the 70’s and 80’s always kept the tension up throughout the whole film. By not showing the killer and having creepy POV shots.

Now these films are just filled with dumb teenagers running and screaming their heads off for no reason. At least they used to do it with a little class.

Prom Night is a poor excuse for a movie. It’s not worth the price of admission and it’s not worth your time. Please spend your time and money doing something productive instead.

If you really want good original movies to come out then save your money on films like this and support original films that mean something.
