During the graduation ceremonies on May 9, the two 2008 recipients of the Richard E. Smith Leadership Scholarship will be announced. Six Hutchinson Community College students are currently being considered for the award, all of whom have participated in volunteer activities through HCC and in community service projects. Only one male and one female will receive the honor. “The Scholarship Award has been a wonderful way to recognize our outstanding student leaders who are planning to continue their education at a university,” said Dr. Ed Berger, president of HCC. The six students include Magen Barfield, Hutchinson; Amy Forbes, Hutchinson; Nathan Lind, Buhler; Ali May, Colwich; Derek Ohl, Hutchinson; Jared Unrau, Goessel. Magen Barfield is a Presidential Scholar, President of Circle K, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. “I am appreciative of Mr. Smith’s generosity. I know whoever gets the award will be deserving of it.” Barfield majors in nursing and plans to attend Fort Hays State University. Amy Forbes is a Presidential Leadership scholar, Vice President of Circle K, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. She majors in Business Administration and minors in management and marketing. “Knowing that I am up for this scholarship with some of HCC’s most talented and influential students is something to be proud of.” Forbes will attend Wichita State University. Nathan Lind is a Presidential Leadership scholar, HCC Ambassador, and a member of HCC Vocal ensembles Badinage and Vera Voce. “I believe this is a great honor to even be chosen as a finalist. To get it would probably make my year.” Lind majors in sports administration and plans to attend Wichita State University. Ali May is a Presidential scholar, member of the honors program, and a student representative for the Science Department Open House. She majors in the physicians assistant program and plans to attend Kansas State University. Derek Ohl is a member of both the HCC Tennis Team and Campus Activities Board. Ohl is a student representative of several HCC committees. He has a combined major in geology and geophysics and plans to attend Kansas State University. Jared Unrau is a Presidential Leadership Scholar, president of student government, and a member of both Phi Theta Kappa and the HCC crops judging team. Unrau majors in agriculture technology management and will attend Kansas State University. Unrau said he felt privileged to be considered for the opportunity of the scholarship. “I think it is great that someone is willing to help someone else that they don’t even know. I hope that someday I can help others the way that they have helped me.” The scholarship is sponsored by Smith, a graduate of HCC and a successful entrepreneur. “He has very generously chosen this vehicle to encourage students to be involved at Hutchinson Community College and the community and then to build on the success that they have experienced,” Dr. Berger said.
