 Tennis tanks at regionals
By Tyler Lichti

The Hutchinson Community College tennis team competed in the Region 6 Championships on April 18-21.

With nationally ranked schools like Cowley County and Barton County sporting international players, the HCC squad had some stiff competition to look forward to at the tournament.

Sophomore Liz Crawmer started off play winning her first match, Crawmer then lost to Donata Majauskaite of Cowley, 6-0, 6-0. Majauskaite went on to win the bracket.

Freshman Lana Saliger came out strong, winning her first match, 6-1, 6-2. But then lost to Jennifer Hocker of Cowley, 6-0, 6-0.

HCC tennis coach Don Lind was pleased with the output from the freshmen, who were competing in their first regional.

Nothing changed much on the men’s side for Hutch.

Justin Wassinger, freshman, came out and defeated a Butler player, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Then lost to Emilio Kirby of Johnson County, 6-0, 6-0.

Fellow freshman Phillip Jelinck also won his first match, but then lost to flight champion Chris Heck, 6-0, 6-0.

“It was tough,” Lind said. “It’s just a really competitive regional. Some of the schools that qualified for nationals will do very well. They will probably finish in he top 15”

Cowley County won the women’s side while Barton County won on the men’s side. Hutch finished ninth in both.
