Dragon tracksters place 8th and 12th in nationals

The Hutch indoor track team concluded its season in Manhattan at the national championship meet March 2nd and 3rd.

The men’s team placed eighth and the women were 12th. Hutch had 13 athletes named All-American, and nine school records broken.

HCC sprinter Pam Shelite, freshman, gets an ice pack and plastic wrap applied to her ankle by Trainer Sarah Dugan, freshman. Shelite had just worked out with the team on the first day of  spring track practice at Gowan Stadium, on March 6.

“It was a good solid meet,” Coach Pat Becher said. “They competed well, and I was pleased with how we did.”

On the women’s side there were six athletes who earned All-American status, Ruth Limo, freshman, was named twice placing third in the 5,000-meter race and fourth in the 3,000-meters. In both races she broke the school record with times of 10:31.12 and 18:22.46. Limo set a school record in the one-mile race with a time of 5:22.21.

Shelltrice Turner, freshman, who was named All-American in the 60-meter dash placed fifth in a school-record breaking time of 7.82 seconds. Turner also set school records in the 55-meter dash and 200-meter race with times of 7.24 and 25.87.

Cassie Wolf, Lisa Volk, sophomores, Pam Shelite and Lori Vohling, freshmen, were named  All-American in the 4 x 800-meter relay placing third.

Mandy Atkinson, freshman, who placed 15th in the pole vault went nine feet for a school record.

In the men’s field, Steve Hurst, freshman, Kyle Goerl and Jeff Leiker, sophomores, all were named All-Americans in the pentathlon placing third, fourth and fifth.

Jason Thurman, freshman, All-American in the 600-meter race set a school record placing fourth in a time of 1:21.98.

Nyjah Pilgrim and Sean Beuford, freshman, both were named All-American in the triple-jump getting fifth and sixth places. Pilgrim’s best jump of 49 feet 11 1/2 inches is a Hutch record.

Daniel Jackson, sophomore, was named All-American in pole vault, he placed sixth.

“The results speak for themselves,” Becher said. “It shows we have an outstanding program. The women’s two-mile relay was a really nice surprise.
