Nursing students raise dough
By Angie Froese

It may seem ironic, but eating a donut may now help future health workers.

For the past three Mondays, March 4, 11 and 18, HCC nursing students sold Krispy Kreme donuts in the Parker Student Union with the hopes of raising money for the Hutchinson Association of Nursing Students (HANS). The proceeds were raised to help send the students to the National Nursing Students Convention in Philadelphia from April 3 to April 7.

“Word of mouth was that it was a really good fundraiser,” said Lynette Loutzenhiser, Hutchinson, one of the six nursing students from HCC who will be attending the convention. “We’ve had really good results.”

Lynette Loutzenhiser sells donuts to go to a nursing convention in Philadelphia to Adam Glendening Stackton, who’s signing a check. Janet Fast said 600 donuts were sold within the three days.

The goal of the fundraiser was to raise about $4500 before the students leave for Philadelphia. Loutzenhiser said that she thinks they will be very close, within $200 to $300.

The students started each morning with 200 dozen donuts  -- a total of 7,200 donuts -- to be sold over the three Mondays. Some of the boxes were pre-sold, which Jessica Mcallister, Nickerson, said helped them go faster.

“We had sign-up sheets,” Mcallister said. “We took them around to the police station and to the hospital and we had people sign up for how many they wanted (in advance.)”

Overall, the donuts were beneficial in helping to raise the necessary funds for the trip. However, some parts of the fundraiser were not as much fun.

“Getting up early in the morning to go get the donuts is the pits,” Janet Fast, Hutchinson, said.

Loutzenhiser had no problem with waking up early, but did run into other problems.

“I was fine until I got to Wichita,” she said. “But getting lost in Wichita was no fun. I left at 4:30 in the morning. I was in Wichita at 5:30. It took me an hour to find the place.”

The convention will include educational courses, a dance and sightseeing.

“We’re going to train for the Red Cross Disaster Relief,” Fast said. “It’s a two-part course.”
