Balancing
act Cafeteria food is part of a balanced diet for many students who depend solely on it for their daily nutrients. How balanced that diet is depends on the person. “My main problem with the food here is that it’s really unhealthy,” Nichole Brooks, Council Grove, said. “There isn’t anything that’s not full of fat or carbohydrates. People get tired of eating a salad or sandwich every day to stay healthy.” Brooks believes another cafeteria problem is the meal plan. “I don’t like that if you’re on a 14-meal plan and you miss meals during the week you can’t make them up on the weekends,” she said. The cafeteria is responsible for feeding hundreds of students every day, students with different schedules, tastes and preferences. The Great Western Dining service tries to accommodate to students' needs. For instance, the cafeteria has been opening for lunch at 11 a.m. for the past three months to try to allow students with 11: 30 classes more time to eat. “I think we have a pretty good selection and most students get their money’s worth,” Rick Vandiver, manager, said. Despite the cafeteria’s attempts to please, students have different views on the quality and availability of the food. “They could have a little more variety and not serve the same things over and over again, but it’s not bad,” Andrew Maxwell, Salina, said. “I eat it.” |
