Every conference
should adopt a conference championship As the college football season winds to a close, teams are vying for prestigious bowl game berths. Most of the conferences across the country do not take the top two teams and have a conference championship game. However, the Southeastern and the Big 12 take the top two out of their respective divisions and have them play each other to determine the conference champion. More conferences should adopt this idea. The championship game idea would benefit the schools, the fans and the actual conference. For example, this year both Iowa and Ohio State went undefeated in the Big 10. These two teams should go to a neutral site and face off to determine the actual champion of the conference instead of having co-champions. The winner could go on to a BCS bowl and the loser would go to a less prestigious bowl. Money is also to be considered. By having a championship game in a neutral site, conferences can go out and get a corporate sponsor such as Dr. Pepper, who sponsors the Big 12 championship. A neutral site would promote travel of fans of schools involved and it would benefit a city’s tourism industry. The conference can also decide on how to split the ticket gate from a game in a stadium that would hold anywhere from 65,000-90,000 people. Once this idea is adopted by all conferences, college football would be a better game. Rusty Whitcher for the Editorial
