Sometimes things go right, other times things go horribly wrong. For the Hutchinson Community College football team, things went horribly wrong against the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens on Sept. 20.

HCC had hopes of knocking off the number two ranked Red Ravens on the Ravens’ home field. This was not the case as Coffeyville decimated the Blue Dragons, 59-8.

“It was a case where every mistake we could make, we made,” Head Coach Craig Jerslid said. “Coffeyville played about as well as they could, and we played about as bad as we could.”

After a three and out for HCC, the Red Ravens scored on a 65 yard pass on their first possession. A few minutes later, the Ravens scored again on a 26-yard pass that made it 14-0, just five minutes into the game. HCC was able to contain the Red Ravens for the rest of the first quarter.

Coffeyville scored early in the second quarter to take a 21-0 lead. HCC looked as if they were on the ropes, but freshmen Robert Coats and Kyle Roberts had other ideas. Coats hit Roberts for a 55-yard touchdown. A Red Raven turnover, their first of the season, was converted by HCC when freshman Ryan Lowe kicked a 40-yard field goal with 56 seconds to go in the half.

Only trailing 21-9 at halftime, the Dragons were poised to make a run. Then the floodgates opened. Coffeyville scored 37 unanswered points in the second half. Coffeyville put up staggering offensive numbers, 626 yards and 27 first downs. HCC was held to 155 yards and was limited to minus19 yards in the second half.

Next on HCC’s schedule is a road game at Air Force Prep on Saturday, Sept. 27.

“It’s a big challenge,” Jeslid said. “We’ve got to improve, more mentally, than physically. If we get that fixed, we’ll be right where we want to be.”
