HCC wins double header
Softballers sweep double dip against Cloud
County Community College
By Rusty Whitcher

7-3 and 8-7
The chief adversary of the Hutchinson Community College Softball team hasn’t been any particular foe.  It’s been Mother Nature and her unpredictable weather patterns. But the skies cleared off and the temperature warmed up enough to let the Blue Dragons to actually play some games against Cloud County Community College on April 2.

against Cloud County.  The Lady Dragons
swept both games of the doubleheader,
winning 7-3 and 8-7.  Stephens hit a
single to drive in the winning run in the
 second game.

The Thunderbirds rolled into Fun Valley to take on the Blue Dragons in a doubleheader.  Cloud County could only muster six hits and three earned runs against freshman Amber Stephens in a 7-3 victory for HCC.

HCC scored four runs in the fifth inning to break the game open.  A throw on a squeeze play wasn’t handled cleanly allowing two Blue Dragon runs to score.  Freshman Alicia Kirby went two for four at the plate, scored twice and had two of Hutch’s five stolen bases.

In the second game, Stephens again started on the mound due to the after effects of a rib injury to freshman Brooke Harrison.  This time Cloud County was able to get their bats going and knocked Stephens out after only one inning.  Harrison entered the game and Cloud County was able to score four runs off of her.   Harrison settled down and held Cloud County scoreless for the final five innings.

The Blue Dragons were down four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but rallied to tie the game.  In the extra inning, Cloud County gave up two two-out walks to freshman Sarah Huddleston and sophomore Naisha Cruz.  Freshman Angela Stephens ripped a line drive to right center field that scored Huddleston for the 8-7 victory.

HCC travels to Colby Community College for games on April 12 and 13.
