Residence halls get a makeover
By Yunis Dehbi

Dana Hinshaw and her staff didn’t have much of a Christmas Break.  They were busy renovating the lobbies in the Kent West and Kent South residence halls.

Emmy Lou Rathbun, Ellsworth, left, and Becky Voth, Newton, watch TV
at the “New York Loft” lobby at
Kent South in the residence halls.
The women’s  lobbies were renovated to encourage students to spend
time at the same place to push for more friendship at the residence halls.  Rathbun said the lobbies are popular.  “It’s more fun to be in there because
it can hold more people,” she said.

“The lobbies look very institutional, and we thought it’ll be fun for students to renovate the lobbies,” Dana Hinshaw, director of the housing office said.

The lobbies feature a variety of themes.
There’s the Safari Room, Castle Room
and the New York Loft.

“Delayna and I brainstormed a lot on how
we can do the lobbies so they can be fun,” Hinshaw said. “We just threw ideas out,
so we went to Kansas City and got really
good and cheap prices on furniture.”

The lobbies had lost their appeal because
services such as the Internet, cable TV,
and phones are included inside the rooms.
Lobbies merely became the place for the microwave for many students.

“Before, nobody had TV in their rooms,
so all students would gather at the lobby,
hang out, watch TV, and get to know
each other,” Hinshaw said.

“But we lost that since the kids are completely entertained in their rooms,” she said. “With this renovation, we want to bring students together again, and get that spirit back.

“We’ve had a lot of help from Coach Crookes, as well as Brandy Kissick, who painted the banners.  We had to work late at night for several days. We really wanted to be done before the kids came back.”
