Baseball team prepares
 for season within season
By Katie Krekel
Staff Writer

Like the melting of a winter freeze, the baseball team is warming up for conference play.

The Dragons left for Louisiana with a 3-9-1 record and came back with two more wins under their belt. The team dominated over Bossier Parish 9-6, came up short against TexArkana, losing 5-4, but coming back to beat Coffeyville Community College 9-6.

Looking back on the weekend, Head Coach Jon Wente said the team overall performed a lot better than they had in past weeks.

Even though the Dragons have had many losses, they have been playing well.

“We’ve gotten off to a rocky start. We’ve had a tough schedule, so we haven’t been playing poorly, we have just been up against some tough teams,” Wente said. “We’ve played the number one ranked, number three ranked, and number five ranked teams ranked in the country and beaten the number three and number five teams.”

Looking ahead, Wente said keeping morale up is going to be a big obstacle.

“I’d say morale for our club, because of our tough schedule,” Wente said. “We need to remind ourselves the we’re a good team, we play hard and stick with that.”

Players are starting to see improvement in each other.

“We have had a good pitching performance by Brandon King,” freshman Thad Ledford, said. “Things are starting to come together with pitching, hitting and defense.”

While the team wants to perform well now, they’re really looking forward to the beginning of conference play.

“We still have three games before conference, so we’re going to play as tough as we can until it starts,” Wente said.

Even though the Dragons are looking forward to conference play, they realize that it’s not going to be a walk in the park.

The Dragons’ home opener will be Wednesday, March 17, with a double dip against Dodge City at 3 p.m. at Hobart-Dettar Field.
