Baseball continues to roll
A walk-off home run gives the Blue Dragons a win over Pratt despite errors
By Doug Hanna

It’s an old adage, but its true.Big-time players have to come up with big-time plays.

Fortunately for the Hutchinson Community College baseball team, sophomore shortstop Josh Odell is doing so.

Odell, the 2002 Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Dragons a 4-3 win over Pratt Community College on April 13.

Three errors nearly cost the Dragons the victory, including an untimely throwing miscue. Freshman catcher Brian Hastings missed on a throw to third in the eighth inning.  The runner scored on the play, giving the Beavers a one-run lead.

However,  sophomore Kyle Kalish, who had three hits, including a home run in the first game, singled in the bottom of the inning and Odell blasted his seventh home run to win it.

Unfortunately, that momentum could not hold up in the second game.

The Dragons had five extra-base hits, but left eight men on base, as the Dragons dropped a 7-5 decision to the Beavers.

Truan Mehl, sophomore, had two doubles among his four hits and scored four times for Hutch, but Pratt hit a two-run homer in the sixth to go up 5-3.  Hutch scored two in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game before a Kalish throwing error gave Pratt a run in the seventh.  Pratt scored once more to ice the win.

The Dragons blew an opportunity to gain a game on first-place Seward County, which lost its first game. Hutch remains two games back with 11 games to play.

The split came off of a two-game sweep of Colby the day before.  The Dragons won 9-2 and 3-2, appearing to have all the momentum needed to sweep Pratt and move up on Seward in the Jayhawk Conference race.

Hutch hosts its next game on April 19 against Barton County Community College.  The games are at Hobart Detter Field starting at 1 p.m.  The Dragons will get another shot at Seward at home on April 26.
