What are the Prerequisites for the Surgical Technologist Program?

A:

The prerequisite for the program is current CNA status and Healthcare Provider level CPR.

How long is the program?

A:

This is a 10 month program, beginning in August and ending in June. We admit one class per
year.

Is there required testing prior to application into the program?

A:

ACT or ASSET/Compass Writing and Reading, and ACCUPLACER.

Are there minimum scores that must be achieved?

A:

ACT scores - 17 English, 17 Reading. ASSET Writing - 41 or Compass Writing - 53. ASSET

Reading - 39 or Compass Reading - 75.  ACCUPLACER - 30.

Is there an application process?

A:

Yes, applications may be obtained from the Allied Health Advisor or from the Surgical
Technologist program office. Applications must be complete prior to evaluation.  This
includes all forms, all references returned, CNA and CPR documentation on file.

Do I have to interview?

A:

Yes.  A formal interview is required.  This will be scheduled as soon as the application file is complete.

Where is clinical done?

A:

We have 9 clinical sites at this time. Students have 2 rotations and students are required
to travel to distant sites. At this time we have sites in Hutchinson, McPherson, Salina,
Great Bend, Pratt and Kingman.

How many hours a week will I spend in clinical?

A:

Clinicals are 8 hour days. One week in December. During 2nd semester, clinical is Monday,
Wednesday and Friday. Beginning the Monday after graduation, we have approximately 3 full
weeks of clinical, Monday through Friday.

What is the job placement rate for surgical technologists?

A:

We have 80-100% placement rate for those students seeking a job in the surgical technology
field.

A:

According to O*Net Online, the most recent average hourly income in the state of Kansas for Surgical Technologists is $18.46 with the national average being a bit higher.

Is there a certification examination?

A:

Yes, the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting administers the
certification examination.

Q?

Is certification mandatory?

A:

No, it is voluntary. However, certification demonstrates that an individual is proficient
in the area of surgical technology.

Q?

Is the program accredited?

A:

Yes, the Surgical Technologist Program at Hutchinson Community College is accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Q?

How many hours do I need to plan for study once I am in the program?

A:

Typically we recommend that students plan two hours of study for every hour of
classroom/lab time. This will vary with each student but this is the average.
